How To Sound Like Iron Maiden (Adrian Smith)

Notes: Smith's preferred guitar is the Fender Stratocaster, though he has used a variety of others over his career including several different Dean models, a custom built Jackson, Ibanez Destroyer, Gibson Les Pauls, a Gibson Explorer and Gibson SGs. On the A Matter of Life and Death DVD he says the first guitar he bought was a Gibson Les Paul Goldtop that cost him £235 when he was 17; he's still using it, and "it's still probably the best guitar I've got". He had to work on a building site all summer to pay for it.  Adrian uses gauge 9 strings and has his action set slightly higher than average.  For his solo work with Bruce Dickinson and with Maiden on occasion, he has used (at least live) a Jackson King V guitar tuned down to D, providing a darker and heavier sound. In the booklet of their album A Matter of Life and Death, Adrian is shown with a custom made two neck Jackson Soloist.

Building You Own Recording Studio

With the huge advancement in technology it’s possible to have a home studio. Hiring a studio can be costly and if you have a limited time your recording can be rushed and not have the time spent mixing it like you want.

PC or Mac?

A lot of people prefer Mac. But you want a computer with as much RAM 512 minimum. At least 120 GB hardrive.

Recording Software

Theres a whole host of software programmes Cubase, Garageband, Cakewalk, Sony Forge, Ableton Live.

All are good but I prefer Cubase.

Audio Interface

You need an audio interface. If like me you expect to plug your guitar into the microphone socket on your laptop you’ll have a whole host of problems.

An audio interface (box) takes the strain from your pc/mac and sorts out all the sound driver problems you might have otherwise.

Microphones, guitars and keyboards can be plugged into audio interface.

Audio interface range in price from basic to ones that handle midi and power microphones.

VST

Virtual Studio Technology. There’s a host of VST programmes.

Native Instruments Guitar Rig 5 for instance is a standalone piece of software. But you can open it in within Cubase and apply Guitar Rig sounds to what you’ve already recorded.

The best thing I bought was a usb midi keyboard. I can control EZ Drummer and Philharmonic software with it. Once I’ve recorded my midi track it’s fully editable.
